At some point in our lives, all of us will have a seriously ill family member, an aging parent, a new baby or adopted child, or get sick ourselves. Since taking care of family is non-negotiable, we all need to be able to take time from work without worrying about losing our jobs or going into debt. This is why Oregon needs a paid family and medical leave insurance program that includes partial wage replacement and job protections for extended medical and family leave.
Oregon’s paid family medical leave program must ensure that all families and workers are included. All too often, certain types of workers, like part-time workers, agricultural workers or workers at small employers, are excluded from important protections at work, like paid family and medical leave. We also need to update our defi nition of family member in law, which currently excludes many family members, including chosen family members, multigenerational families, siblings and many others.
I support an effort to pass an inclusive paid family and medical leave insurance program.
All of us need time off at some point in our lives to care for our families or ourselves. This is why I care about paid family and medical leave.
